.mobi - just another tld?

I'm getting a fair barrage from my registrar about the wonderfulness of .mobi domains, and how I'll be completely missing the next internet wave if I don't snatch up all my domains at .mobi soon.

I suppose I could have a site or two that would be useful to browse via mobile devices, but could someone give me the real scoop on this? Is .mobi any different in implementation than all the other tld's? Assuming I'm clever enough to recognize a mobile device and use a separate style sheet for it, will doing that via my old clunky .com and .org domains be just as good as if I did it for .mobi?

As far as I know it just another tld, nothing special. If you've coded your website properly than it should be accessable from any device anyway. I think he is just Marketing for sales.
