I'd like to determine a users location from their IP, probably no more detailed than country/state. I've searched the forums and the only thing I've been able to find is a link to this site: http://www.maxmind.com/app/geoip_country Although it's pretty pricy. Does anyone know of a way I'd be able to do this myself?

Well, you can do it yourself by using maxmind..

They have a PHP-script ready for you as well.

Edit: they have a free version too?

If you mean creating something from scratch, I doubt you'll be able to do it yourself, but maybe you are a clever dude ;)

The PHP script they supply requires a license key, which I assume you have to buy. Also for their trial account the Terms Of Use says you can only use it for credit card validation.

The ip_2_country database is free.
