Question:
I just found out that FrontPage is being phased out. I've read several posts stating the preference of DreamWeaver. When I bought FP, it seemed like a good choice (although, not now). Right now I'm not in a position to buy another web program. I've just begun working on a new site, and intend to continue. My question is this... If I want to change programs down the line (and may very well be forced to), what sorts of issues might I face? I know that most hosting sites have frontpage extensions. If I've loaded a bunch of pages via frontpage extensions and then go to Dreamweaver, what will the ramifications be?

Thanks in advance

FrontPage extensions are really a server issue, not a software one. You can design pages just as easily in Notepad for a FP extension server as in FP. You only need to understand how the coding works, rather than having the program do it for you.

To directly answer your question: there are too many websites out there dependent upon FP extensions for it to be likely that these will be disabled in the near future, unless web hosting companies want to lose a great many of their clients.

As to ramifications of changing from FP to DW, there aren't too many, unless you use those horrid FP themes. Those won't translate to DW. As to the rest of your code, if it's done well, you can edit it in any program.

so long as your using Front Page 2000 or higher your going to be fine for some time without reason to fear.

What is going to happen, is your going to use whatever version you have currently until you outgrow it, sometime in the future. At that point you should look at where your skills and need direct you.
