IE vs gif transparency

I have a problem =: with IE.

It gives a grey background to some (text) png pics, although they have transparent backgrounds.
How to get rid of that?
FF works ok with it.

I can't use gifs instead because some (handwriting) text gifs look very lousy when i fill them with some pattern.

IE does not support png transparency well (not sure about IE7).

For that reason I steer clear of transparent png. Here's some more on the subject (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1645331,00.asp) including discussion of a workround.
