I've been using Flashblock (http://flashblock.mozdev.org/) with Firefox 2.0 on my old, under-powered notebook PC for a few days now, and I quite like it. It allows me to keep Flash installed for when I actually want to view some Flash content, but keeps it from displaying/running until I click on the icon it displays in place of the Flash object. This puts less stress on my PC when I open pages with Flash in them, plus I don't have to worry about being startled by sudden music or other sounds that some of them generate it.

I definitely recommend it if you browse with FF and would like more control over when Flash is allowed to do its thing.

(I am not affiliated in any way with this application - just a satisfied user.)

Sounds good.

not keen on throwing away bandwidth, especially when other applications need it.

Never used Flashblock before. Thanks to the majority of developers seeming to think that in order to put flash objects on a page, you must use Javascript, my Noscript extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/) used to block most flash objects without even meaning to. I say "used to block" because now, on my most recent computer, the flash installer seems to think that flash doesn't work with my CPU. I know for a fact that it does work, because it works on the other operating system that I don't use that I have installed on this computer. So now I just do not and can not have flash.

I've been using Flashblock for about a year now, and I agree--it is a very good plugin. Especially handy for browsing MySpace with my volume up, and not having to worry about getting blasted by music on people's pages. ;)
