I'm planning to definitely register a domain.

My top three choices are:

1and1
Yahoo
Godaddy

I've heard that 1and1 is a bad domain provided, though its very cheap at $6.00 a year.

I wonder if there are better prices and overall reliability.

Also I use www.awardspace.com to host my files, its a free service. Are there any other free service like it?

-When registering a domain, lets say www.mydomain.com, can I make it so that I can add other names such as forums.mydomain.com , help.mydomain.com etc/?? What features should I be looking for when purchasing a domain?

I would highly recommend GoDaddy for domain services. I've had my domain (JamesKahlin.com) hosted with them for years now and I can't recall even so much as one complaint...

As for hosting, you're not going to get very good service at all using a free provider. I would suggest going with a paid service. There are some decently priced hosting providers out there that have great service. One I would suggest (from personal experience) is A Small Orange (http://www.asmallorange.com/). They have great prices and very reliable service. They also have a very friendly and knowledgeable staff who respond very quickly (in my experience) to any problems you send their way.

That's my .02 cents. ;)

For my domain name, I've always used http://www.networksolutions.com/. That way I know I'm in good hands and that the domain name is actually mine. As for hosting, I just host on my home computer.

I beg to differ. Furtopia and Furnation are excellent free hosts.

Neither has advertisments (one has an online store, the other goes off donations, respectively).

Furtopia also has PHP/SSI support, although I do not know if they have perl support. Their customer service is also quite decent. :)

They DO have one caveat: They ask that you focus on anthropomorphics. If you already do so, that's no problem.

I agree - we have several massive websites hosted through them; they are real time online learning environments. Not had any problems yet.

is that a good hosting provided? 50gb, 999gb bandwidth, $5 a month with 2 yr contract. Should I go for it?

I highly suggest you *thoroughly read* all of the fine print and disclaimer text that comes with your domain registrar and host provider. They are not all the same and with some of these companies you don't actually *own* your domain name, others require you give them the right to aquire (and therefore sell) your domain should you default on your agreement or let it expire (even for a day - ICANN means nothing to them).
