Well, 2 weeks ago I was involved in a bit of an accident. It was about 12:30 am local time, and I was stopped at a light. A woman hit me from behind in an SUV (Saturn Vue). Physically, my car had minimal damage, her truck's front end was pretty much destroyed.

This was the first time I had ever been in an accident. Not sure what to do, I got the # for the local police. They came over shortly. Filed the report with the officer and everything seemed to be going fine.

I called up later when I woke up to file it with my insurance company. They gave me 0% fault, 100% on her. I wanted to wait until we got the police report so they could locate the person who hit me. A few days later I got a call saying that they found her, she was also a geico (I've got geico) customer. Apparently, they had dropped her from her policy though. Great I say to myself.

Well, thank god I had my insurance. I took my car to the shop today (they have an express center about 20 minutes away). They gave me the quote. $1936. Yeesh. Good thing I only have to pay my deductible on that one, and even that they're reimbursing me. Now to file the small claims court suit for the rental car.

I had a car accident when I was 18 (3 years ago). I was driving straight through a green light when a lady coming the opposite direction turned in front of me to go to the street on my left (NB: in Australia we drive on the left side of road). We had an almost head on with both cars complete ride offs. Police arrived at the scene and due to my age I was automatically treated awefully and as though it was my fault. They did an alcohol breath test and found I was 0.00 and the other driver was 0.25 (5 times the legal limit). Police 'forgot' to take a witness statement on the event so I was unable to claim on insurance unless I was 100% in the right. I later found out that the ladies husband is a major drug dealer in town and pays off the police.

I'm a believer in insurance. When I bought my last new car (not brand new, but just out of a Program, still very low mileage), I bought the optional 'worker's insurance' when I financed the car. It only added an additional $10.ooUS per month maybe, over the course of the lien. If you have an accident at work and are unable to work, or for any reason (excluding getting fired or quiting of course, but including elective surgery, etc), the insurance pays the lienholder per~month until you return to work.
Over the course of that 5-year lien, I had foot surgeries on both feet, a year apart, totalling 5-months of being 'off work', so the insurance made five payments for me, totally and wholly exceeding the amount that I had to pay (was paying).
My next car, -same situation. I had a bike accident and broke my arm and was off work for two months. Payments faithfully and dully made. And a year later, re-broke the SAME arm in the SAME place in an incident at my place of work when a large OSHA-mandated chemical containment tank installation went wrong... another two months off work and another two payments... (and, the latter being a 'at work' incident, there was a Worker's Comp. settlement which was totally fair and agreeable to everyone...)
My dad got me doing that with new vehicle purchases, this 'worker' insurance' thing. He had the same thing for his new truck purchase, -and he had a mild heart one summer attack and was off work for 6 or 7 months, and again, the payments were made for him at no cost or penalty to him until he was fit and able to return to work.

Insurance... you can live with it. :D

Bah! And the problem with us healthy people is we don't break enough bones. I need to get me some insurance and then jump off building, otherwise I'll be paying into the system and getting nothing back :D
