I was planning to register a domain today for $8.99 at godaddy.com I'm like wow great deal right? Wrong. They tell me by registering there is no private domain or whatnot and my info will be expose publicly if I dont register for a private domain. Which from $8.99 turned into $17.99.

Is there a downside on putting a fake address and name when registering? All I care about is my .com.

Using fake info can result in your domain registration being cancelled if the registrar tries to contact you using the details supplied and discovers that they are fake. Displaying genuine contact details is one of the requirements of domain registration and all that the privacy option usually means is that the registrar display their contact details instead of yours. They still need to know your contact details in order to be able to contact you though.

If you also need hosting then I would recommend 1and1.com hosting. Their cheapest package is $2.99/mo (Linux or IIS) and it includes the domain name registration. I have a number of sites with them and have been very pleased with their service. Private registration is also included in that fee so all in all it is a great way to go.

I believe that felgall made an excellent point. What you are asking violates the rules of the forums. Please check the Domain Forum for additional information on registration.
