Is this possible? I don't mean totally transparent, but perhaps a link to a generator that allows opacity changes... etc. Please help!

Java is NOT JavaScript, but other than that I believe what you want to do is possible using CSS and JavaScript.
A good place to check for some examples is the http://www.jsworkshop.com/ site. Michael has examples from a number of his books dealing with different types of roll-over menus.
Also, check this site for examples & free code I'm sure there's something here similar to what you're looking for.
