I'm trying to make an animation with transparent background in flash (and I'm still quite new to flash). I made tansparent gifs in photoshop but when I import them to flash, the library states that the file format is bitmap and not gif. Is this normal?

It's not changing the file type. "bitmap" is a generic term used for raster or non-vector images.
