What are .tmp files, and why do I have a gazillion of them on my computer?

I think there was a virus that did that a while back... made one for every .exe on your computer? If this is similiar to what you are seeing, google the topic for a fix, and of course use a virus scan detection tool as well.

No idea. The format of the names are ~WRL###.tmp Each "#" stands for a digit.

Either a Nortons Antivirus Backup file or a temporary file for a huge range of applications

the tmp files are ok, many apps create them... when i run out of space i just delete the tmp file, 2gb instant ;)
the idea is that some aps create tmp files in their normal process then, for some reason, such as errors, crashes, whatever, they don't delete them... ofcourse, there's a folder for them in documents and settings, but not all apps use them... just delete them...
