You can buy ads on search engine pages just the same as you can buy ads on other pages. Like with most pages people are likely to ignore the ads and just look at the page content however since the ads on a search result page look more like the real content than is normally the case for ordinary web pages you may have a few more people select them rather than the real results that are more likely to contain what they are looking for. Of course when they don't find what they are after on the advertised page they will then return to the results and find the real page that contains what they wanted. (Of course if the advertised page was really the one that they were looking for it would show up at the top of the real results as well).

not necessarily true. depends on many factors.
you can pay for top listings with the top search engines/listing services, though most wont gurantee #1, they will gurantee top 3 or 5.
for Yahoo!

and of course, if your client is serious, then calling the marketing department makes sense: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/address/

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is for Organic listings and you can not pay any major search engines to be listed there. You can only pay for placement with Paid Search / Sponsored Search.

not necessarily true
For 10th rate search engines it might not be but it is certainly true for the big three as they want to stay in the top three.
You can pay someone to optimise your page so as to try to get a higher ranking. Depending on the keyword popularity you may be able to get a number one spot that way - of course if you can figure out the right changes to make then you don't have to pay someone to do it for you.
If you want a guaranteed spot on the first page then you pay the search engine to place an ad there. This is completely separate from the regular listings.
Any search engine that accepts payment for placing listings in the normal entries part of the page rather than the ads is acting unethically and would soon have no one using it since the paid pages are significantly less relevant to what people are looking for than what people would expect to find in the list.

As I said you can buy ads on the page at Yahoo but you can't buy a spot in the actual search results.

In reference to this quote, I have few questions:
1. What can we do to optimize our page so that it pulls up, on top, when a search is conducted?
2. Where on html page (and how) would you code this?
I have worked on few html pages for company use (intranet) but never had to deal with this issue before. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

1. Get other sites with similar content to link to yours, as well as optimize for for your keywords. If your keywords are very competitive then it'll be much harder to get a top position.
2. There are many sites and tutorials over the Internet that will take you through the step-by-step process of optimizing your site and explaining it to you. You can try this site for a tutorial, http://www.seo-guy.com/tutorial.html. In addition to this forum, you can seek out forums that specialize in the topic of SEO (search engine optimization), where many SEO professionals hang around. Here's a list of some of those sites, A list of SEO-centered message boards (http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Promotion/Chats_and_Forums/)

Also, try to buy links from text-link-ads or any similar site. It will increase your link popularity and PR. You need to spend money on link building for atleast 3 months, many good links cost $100+ per month.

If you need to buy links in order to get them then your content isn't good enough to deserve a top spot. The pages with the best content on a given subject should be ones that other related sites will want to link to.

I agree with you...just make your content well worth it...but..does it really happen that way..because everyone is trying to make money here...including google....

If you correctly add the meta data in your index page, your index page will be refrenced by the domain that it is uploaded to adn then it will propogate through the internet search engines.
My Girlfriends website lists in the top 10 search results of the major engines and I NEVER PAID A PENNY to do that. Its all down to "Relavent" meta data, if your a site that sells toffe and you index as a site selling spoons, expect to get dropped from the search engine, however if you listed flavours of your toffess, your increasing the breadth of the search engine scope, alternate spellings and references to makes that you supply etc, as long as its relaven, you shouldnt have a problem.
Why pay when you can do it for free?
