create real time chat sites

Can anyone tell me where and how i can create a web enabled chat communtiy on a personal web site. I belive i will have to use Mysql right? if you could help that would be great, thanks. I just have no idea how to do it. Please give me some pointers.

Can anyone help me... I need info on creating and maintaining a chat site on our web site. i would like to have access to the history of the conversations, and would like some guidence in makeing the desicion. thanks

There should be some guide lines or pre made scripts using PHP...search the google for it.
