How many frames in a frameset?

Someone told me a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) that only 4 frames are permitted in a straight (e.g. not nested) frameset.

Is this true? Are there limits to how many frames a frameset can have? And if so does this vary from browser to browser, version to version?

i had a site recently with about 12 frames one inside the other in different combinations and everything works perfectly
