I have a list of products and what i want to do is when they sell put a big SOLD stamp picture over the whole listing. But when i do this the white from the pic shows so theres no trace of what the product was behind it (and yes the customers will still need to see the sold items) and this seems like it would work perfectly if it showed through.. now i know its possible but how can i make it so the white of the pic doesnt show and works as a transparense?

More important than the program, what format are you using?

I have a page on one of my sites that is doing something very similar to what you are describing. The actual item image is a jpg, and until recently the "sold" overlay was a gif- though just last night I redid my overlays as pngs for better quality. As long as you understand how to maintain transparency in your chosen graphics program (and use a file format that can handle transparency), you should have no problems.

I don't know about IE 7 but the other IE versions do not support transparent png files FF does...

I don't use paint shop, but if you create a new image with transparent background then use the text tool to write SOLD you should be able to save it as a gif file..see pic (http://www.kcwebservices.info/sold.gif)

IE7 does support transparency in png images.
I've been trying to figure out a way to do the overlays with CSS (like a foreground-image property, if it existed), but in the mean time, I've actually been using my original overlay files as layers in photoshop and spitting out jpgs of the item with the proper overlay as a single image. So support for png transparency hasn't become an issue quite yet ;)

I was going to say that *png doesn't support transparency, but the previous post suggests that IE7 does(?). Myself, I do not use IE7 and have no plan to any time soon (I tried it briefly... it balled-up some files so I un-installed it asap). I'd just use a *gif file with a transparency as a 'watermark image' but make the z-index higher than the level of the property to be tagged as "sold", and it will be overlaid. If you do not have access to PaintShop or PaintPro, I do and could make these for you. Or you could just use the nice one that aussie made (if it is okay with the author). :)
