After reading a book, I discovered how to smoothly fade images into the background, by cutting out a bit of the image and having, say, 40x as a smooth edge. It then fades the sides into the background, but it does not fade it well, and this is what I need help on.

Part of the image is fading into the gray, same colour as the homepage but at the bottom of the imaeg you can see the edge of the image and this would look sloppy when placed onto the site. How can I nicely fade it into the background all round the image.
Please let me know if you don't know what I mean.
