Hard Drive Crash

My external hard drive crashed, and I can't get it working again. I was able to use a file recovery tool to extract most of my files from it. Then I tried to format it, but Windows won't let me do even that. Since I was able to get files off it, I at least know the disc itself is still spinning and reading fine, but other than that, I can't get it to work at all. Any ideas?

What error message does Windows give when you try to reformat?
