hey everyone, hey Russellb , i am posting my thread here like you recommended me. Thank you.

Well, here it goes, i will try to be as clear as possible.
I am building a website and i want to make it available for my visitors to be able to create a small profile with their own photos/videos, i also want to make it available for other visitors to be able to browse, with choice to instant message eachother.

I have already purchased this program "NuSphere PhpED" and downloaded the free version of MySQL "MySQL Server 5.0" .

Unfortunatly i have tried to get in touch with my web host since tuesday , by phone and by email and didnt get a reply yet. I wanted to find out what database system i will use.So i searched for myself and found this, i hope that enough info :
Server Information

operating system - FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE

mysql version - mysql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.16

perl version - perl, v5.8.3

php version - PHP 4.4.1

What do i need to do to start building my own database ??
Do i have all the software needed ?

Thanks again a million.

Happy New Year,

Luis Martins

What control panel does your web hosting provide? There is usually an option there to allow you to create a database.

its : phpMyAdmin 2.7.0
says : MySQL 4.0.16 running on localhost
and i just created the database, or at least gave it a name.

sorry, i forgot to mention that it does not let me create the kind of database mention above unless i use something else to do it.

thanks

Your hosting service likely has a separate interface that allows you to create/delete databases and database users. (For security reasons, this will be separate from the phpMyAdmin application, so that they can control access to the MySQL user account who has the permissions to do those actions.) Once you've used whatever application they supply for creating databases in their control panel, then you can use phpMyAdmin to define and populate tables in that database.

I am confused, too. I'm afraid I do not understand what you mean.

ok, on "databases"

installed databases = 1
user =1

which says : Once set up, you can administrate your databases through phpMyAdmin (you must re-enter your username and password to administrate).

i click phpMyAdmin reenter my user and password

and this is what comes up :

Show MySQL runtime information
Show MySQL system variables
Show processes
Storage Engines
Databases
Export
Import
Log out

Theme / Style: Darkblue/orangeOriginal
phpMyAdmin documentation
Official phpMyAdmin Homepage
[ChangeLog] [CVS] [Lists]

does it make any sense ?
thanks again

The database you created should be available for selection in the left column of the phpMyAdmin screen in the "Database" drop-down widget.

I don't know, but if not, then you probably aren't ready to jump right into creating a database without spending some time and effort to learn the basics of databases and software programming, and then more specifics about MySQL and PHP (or whatever server-side language you choose to build your application).

I don't even know what Nusphere is.

You don not have to install anything on your PC, but it will likely be a safer place to experiment. You might want to look into downloading and installing something like XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html) onto your PC.
