Sql Server communication speed too low

I really will appreciate any idea about this problem. I am connecting a VB application with SQL Server 2000 over the Internet, taking security advices in account, but communication speed is extremely low (using ADSL 256K modem type).Is it possible to measure efective speed transfer over 1433 port connection, perhaps a client-server VB/C++ piece of code ?
