what is the fastest(in terms of performance) way of doing animation today (client / server side doesn't matter)

java, javascript, flash, vbs, blabla

Maybe I am wrong, but Flash with all its options and possibilities is a good favorite for what you asked for.

I would agree that Flash is the best for this - highly flexible and has its own scripting language.

Flash can be ramped up very high but I don't know if there's a limit.

if it's just animation you're after then i would think gif's are the best bet - as far as i'm aware all the others will at some point depend on your processor etc, and gif's would have to be at a phenomenol rate for that to be a problem!

Actually the reason gifs won't give any problems is becuse all current browsers (AFAIK) limit the FPS you can get with it.
This is becuse IE has done so for a very long time and people not using their brains just cranked up the FPS of gifs and saw it work just fine in IE and forgot about all the other browsers out there.
