I wish to learn Javascript but I was wondering if anyone could suggest either a site our a book that they found most useful.

"JavaScript, The Definitive Guide" by David Flanagan is extremely useful, as is http://devedge.netscape.com/library/manuals/2000/javascript/1.3/guide/

I learned what I needed as I needed it by using this forum. http://www.htmlgoodies.com and a lot of trial and error. I know there's probably still a lot I could learn, but I know enough to get by.

HTML Goodies are bad, very bad. They are full of incorrect and incomplete information. Avoid them at all costs.
