Event(s) Listing/Directory website. What do I need?

Hi,

I want to build an event(s) listings or a directory website. Which allows users to post upcoming events, such as Tradeshows, Concerts, Signings, Appearances, etc. Driven by members, who post their upcoming events. Also, I'd like to have a payment processing backend, which allows users to purchase additonal services/features... sort of like how ebay charges for pictures or fancy designs, etc.

Is there a script for this type of thing? What technology and scripting language should be used?

Want to build it up nice and slow, probably have launch in the flavour of craigslist then build a nicer design and add features as time goes on. Basically, build a hybrid of Pollstar/Craigslist/eBay, but for event listing.

Any input would be highly appreaciated.

I guess your script has to be custom written. Can be done in a plethora of languages like Php , Jsp, Ruby on rails and the list can go on.

Thanks for the response.
After doing some research, I think I will install Joomla! to start with and see where it goes. Need to keep costs low, and there's no need to re-invent the wheel. If it takes off and some revenue is generated then I will pursue other more custom options.
