Hardware Solutions with Web Applications

I have been looking at hardware solutions that handle load-balancing, etc for web applications and am trying to determine where I can get more information on possible solutions that I can leverage hardware for instead of writing software for the solution. Do people just go to company sites or is there a developer discussion somewhere on when to write software vs buying hardware? Thanks.

Load balancing for web app servers is very dependent on the specific server architecture and host OSs involved. (Think distributed session management.) So in general you go to the AS vendor and see what they suggest.
