In Photoshop 7, I'm attempting to create an image for the top of the site, by putting pix from the group's events on top of a starting image. Thanks to Poxicator's post in my last thread, I've got everything I need, except a knowhow on how I can give an image a gradient transparency.

To explain, I want for the pictures to be entirely transparent at the bottom, and about 75% opaque at the top, with a gradient change between the two.

I'm sure there's better examples out there, but the only one I can think of is at LifeHacker.com. The image at the top corner fades away at the bottom. That's just about what I need to do, except I'll be pasting the partially-transparent pictures into another image file.

How might I go about doing this? Please and thanks!

Just create a layer mask on the desired layer, and then use the gradient tool (make sure it's black and white) to draw the gradient on the layer mask (make sure the layer mask is selected, and not the layer itself).

Ok, I have absolutly no clue what a layer mask is, but I found it in there, and tried the Foreground to Transparent gradient and it worked, except I ended up with it... backwards...
Now that I know how it works I can get it going the correct way. Thanks!

No problem.

The easiest way to get the gradient to go the other direction is to drag it in the other direction.

Remember that the gradient tool is direction dependent.

Yea, it just startled me when it went backwards on me.
