The *gif might have been created to only do a certain number of repetitive loops before it 'stops' on the first cell. I have a program like that where you can take two images, -let's say a image of Captain Picard's head and a picture of Darth Vader's head of the aapprox. same size and composure, and cause them to 'morph' between the two, back-and-forth, either a x-number of times, or loop indefinately. (-Really kewl, btw!).

Your *gif might be one of those, made to cycle x-number times then terminate. Would need to view said *gif, and watch it work then stop, re-fresh browser and/or clear cache and if it now works again, -that is probably the reason why.
This 'x-number loops then quit' is a way to call attention to something 'hot' ("button", 'new item/most recent', etc) and then cease as constant movement is annoying and distracting. -It is a kindness towards those whom have vision issues.

Hey, -so long as we're talking 'animated *GIFs' here, -is anyone else excited about the purported release this November of "Firefox 3.0", which is going to have "animated *PNG" ability?? There hasn't been any new 'animated' image format released in like what, -a decade? Would be good to get away from that potential *GIF licensing issue (-are they still litigating this anyone??)..

-Firefox rules!
