resizing images loaded from xml file

My flash project reads thumbnail paths from an XML file and loads them into a movie clip symbol. The problem is that the images load at their native resolution, despite the size of the movie clip symbol. So far I've had to make separate thumbnails for each image, but I would rather not have to make thumbs. Any ideas?
