Hard Disk Serial Number

I'm looking for a javascript which will display the hard disk (C:\) serial number (obtained from DIR command in DOS mode) in a text input text field of a web page.

Actually this is required for a IE-based ebook, for authentication checking. It'll be run from CD.

Back in 2002 EssEss posed a question that "Dave" seems to have answered, but there was information about the reply.

Can anybody tell me how to do it today?

after a brief search, i couldnt find any sort of activex control that would allow you to run a command prompt with activex. that type of activex control would be your key.
