Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Photoshop Tutorial Sites
Hey, everyone, I'm looking for some good sites that have tutorials for Photoshop on them. Specifically, I'm looking for tutorials on character design and animated cartoon animals. I know it can be done in Photoshop, but since I'm fairly new to the concept of character design, I have only a slight clue as to where to start--and even that I am unsure of. If anyone has any good tutorial sites concerning this, please tell me. Thanks.
(And http://thewebmachine.com/ is a good site, but mainly for text effects--not character design.)

I haven't been to all of these but there suppose to be what you need.
http://www.voidix.com/
http://www.absolutecross.com/
http://student.powerhouse.net/andreas.Oberg/
http://www.screaming-art.com/
http://www.deepspaceweb.com/
http://www.jlswebsource.com/
http://rockerboo.com/v7/tentut
http://www.adobeevangelists.com/
Thanks a lot, those are pretty good resources... But they aren't quite what I'm looking for. I was hoping there was a way to create an animated character, for example a bear, with human-like features (a suit, tie, it can talk, walks on its hind legs, etc.), without having to draw it with a mouse or purchase a plugin-pad to draw on.

Then what your looking for is infomation on how to use ImageReady.
It's a little side program of Photoshop's that allows for creating animated gif's Or a file to export to Premeire or Flash.

It's not that I want to create animated GIFs, it's just that I want to learn how to create a cartoon character (human or animal) to export to Flash, but I don't want to draw it by hand or with a mouse.

Like I said, I don't want to have to draw it by hand (or with a mouse). I want to use Photoshop to make the cartoon character.

???????

Seriously, though, I know there's got to be a different way to use shapes and stuff to do it. I just need a tutorial on it. I found a tutorial at this one site that showed how to create a watch (very realistic, but that's not what I'm getting at), and he used the pen tool (not free-hand) with the anchor tool to make the shape of it; but it doesn't explain very well how to make the shape and it says nothing about creating a character (because it's a watch tutorial!).

Geez Jona..you don't make this too easy for us. :D
...you don't want to draw it in any way shape or form..so all I can say is find some clip art or find some images in comics or whatever then scan them into photoshop.
Or by using some of the links perhaps you can find a way to make what you want using basic shapes and filters..

Also most people will do a majority of the art in Adobe Illustrator, then import into photoshop and go from there...
I wasn't trying to make it "hard" for everyone...
Compguy Pete, I'll look into Adobe Illustrator. Does it automatically create some sort of character or something like that? I've never used the program, and I haven't really looked into it or anything, so I don't know much about it.

Just joking Jona.. :D
But seriously, there is no program that I know of that will "automatically" make something for you.
Programs like Photoshop or Illustrator can add effects to things or merge images and so on but you cannot just type into a program "Cartoon Bear" and it makes it for you..though it would be interesting.
Adobe Illustrator is another graphics program like Photoshop where you can do lots of things including adding some very realistic gradient effects..sometimes better than Photoshop.....
I see. Hmm... Well, I looked and found that http://comicsone.com/ uses Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for its comics, so apparently they have been drawn by hand or with a mouse... I thought that you could draw them by clicking in shapes with the pen-tool, I mean, I know you can, but I thought that there was an easier way to get that to work.
But there must be some tutorial online to teach how to create an animated character in Photoshop. I had assumed it was a simple task, since there are so many people who use Photoshop for character creation online; but am I mistaken?

The thing is you could do it without a digi pad...
Illustrator has the ability to have "end points" that you can push and pull to get the curves and other shapes you want.
Most logo's are created in Illustrator and most graphic artists don't need a pen... simply just a good understanding of the program.
So give it time... ;)

Ah yes, time is always the issue. Well, when you have little time to accomplish something, you can't quite give it time; or not as much as you'd like to give it... I've already done a lot in Photoshop, but I was just wondering if there was a better way to do it; I suppose not. Well, thank you anyways for all of your help, guys (and gals). I'll look into Illustrator and I'll figure out how to get Photoshop to work how I want it to... I shall rely on my intellectual abilities! :D lol

Jona, what your looking for is what they call a mascot. I've seen many sites out there that will create a mascot for you for a price. A good example is BoxedArt (http://www.boxedart.com/). Hope that helps. :D
Well, yes, a mascot is what I'm looking for. I've already come up with an idea (a bull), but I want to do it myself. :D It will take a lot more because I'm stubborn, but I want it, and I'll get it. :)

That's the spirit.
Anyway, in the original post on this topic thewebmachine.com was mentioned. I tried checking it out, but I kept getting a 404. Is that site still up or am I just doing something wrong?
Well, the site was up not too long ago; I don't know what happened to it, but it did exist... Must have gone down for bandwidth or something... Not sure.
