hi good day!

just would like to solicit ideas on which is more preferred, a web developer or programmer who knows various
web tools or software e.g. ASP, PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, Java, IIS, MySQL, etc.(client-side and server-side tools)
OR a specialized programmer let says he/she focus only on server-side using not more than three technologies,
such as PHP, MySQL, and SQL?

Thanks.

Depends on your requirements.

It also depends on the company you hope to work for. Smaller companies frequently look for people with wider skillsets so that they can fill a bigger role within the company, whereas larger companies can afford to staff people with a more narrow skillset, but more depth within the skills they do posses. Of course, that's not a definitive rule, and every company is unique.
Personally, I work with everything you listed, except for PHP, every day I come to work. And just for fun, I play with PHP when I'm not at work- one can never know too much

I'm sure we've all heard the saying: A jack of all trades and a master of none. You can learn as many technologies as you like so long as you learn them thoroughly. There isn't much worse than coming in to manage someone else's code and finding yourself faced with code slop.

You can learn as many technologies as you like so long as you learn them thoroughly.Which is very difficult for most people because the various major domains are so large and change so rapidly. To expand on the old saying, you can be broad and shallow or narrow and deep but the volume (or area) will probably have to stay about the same.

Thanks to everyone for a handful of opinions.
