How do you create the wave like effect used in the header on this page?

Thats pretty simple, over 100 views and nobodies told you!!! tut tut.
Create a wave with the path tool and complete the shape to the size or your banner. If you're unsure of how to create it start with a rectangle vector shape in PS and use the add path tool, click once where you want the curve to descend and once where you want it to ascend. Now go to the selection tool and drag up and down accordingly until you get the required shape. Fill your shape with a gradient on a seperate layer and use the bevel layer style to give it a nice shadowed edge. The underlying layer requires a diagonal pattern and by adding a subtle drop shadow to the wave layer you should gain a nice effect.

Ok, forgive my ignorance, but I've never used the path tool. How do I create a vector rectangle and use the add path tool? Where is this tool?

Are you using PhotoShop? or Illustrator or do you have paths available in your graphics app?

excellent.
in the tool palette you see a box underneath the type tool (T) this creates a vector rectangle, select the tool, click and drag to the required size. You can edit the size by the selection tool (looks like an arrow). Deactivate the path by clicking off it and then click on the edge of the rectangle you wish to edit and drag to the new shape. Once you have your rectangle use the pen tool, which is next to the rectangle tool, however you need to hold down within the palette to reveal the +pen tool. Now click in the 2 places of the rectangle where the curve will be, go back to the selection tool and drag out as described above.

Ok, I think I got the shape figured out. Now, how do I add a gradient to the shape on a seperate layer?

In your paths palette you'll probably have a path called work path, double click it and name it (doesnt matter what the name is, just helps to save the path). Using the options in the palette "Make Selection" and on a seperate layer drag the gradient tool from top to bottom. This will produce a grad based on the foreground and background colours in your tool palette so you may wish to change these first.
