Hello, I have a question about computer security. I keep a lot of notes on my computer to myself. It just hit me the other day, I'm careful about internet security but what about computer security. Is this a bad idea? Can my files permissons be set to be unreadable somehow? But where I can change it back if I need to add something to the files? I don't know how to do this or if it can even be done. If it can be done what permission should computer files be set to so that no one can read or copy their content, but so they will still work online. Please let me know, thank you very much.

Several good encryption programs that will help you safeguard your files.

Here's a free one:

and some frontends for it:

Gosh thanks for those links. Isn't that pretty severe though? Do you really have to encrypt your computer files? Can't you set some sort of permission on them?

if you had a linux box, you could have your files unreadable by anyone but you.

Thanks. Like with a program like filezilla or something, normally when I right click on a file online and click on properties I can change its permission. When I do the same thing on my computer is has an option for read only, or hidden. Does anyone know what "hidden" does in filezilla?

If you use the NTFS filesystem you can protect anything from being readable from anyone. No need for third-party programs in that case.
