How to Search Intranet Document Files?

Hi

I've got a departmental intranet that is nothing more than pages listing various reference documents (doc, pdf, xls, rtf, etc). I'm after a tool or coding solution that will allow intranet users to search these documents - any suggestions?

What I'm not really after is a document management repository.

Sounds like you need an indexer. Being a Java guy the one I know about is Lucene (http://lucene.apache.org/) but there are many others out there.
