I should be past this by now??
I am building a site for a photographer who wants to add zipped slideshows down the road. I am at present using my free 10MB webspace just while building it. So I got thinking after adding numerous images and slideshows that I should make sure that I have not exceeded this 10MB.
I thought that if I went to my clients folder holding all the images and pages in it that I could right click it and look at the properties to tell the size??
It looked like it was well over 50MB I sort of paniced thinking I may be charged extra for going over so I started removing pages and images for now to get it back to 10MB.
Anyways after all that I e-mail Telus which is where the free webspace is to inquire about this and the tech said not to worry as there was a block in place so there is no way I could go over the 10MB.
SO, my question is - How big is my site, How can I tell then?
Thanks

The method you used is what I would have done. The sizes would change in a minor way as you pushed them down to the server, but 50MB isn't going to become 10MB. I suspect not all of those files on your local folder were actually on the site, or this "block" wasn't working the way it was described.

Thanks for the reply, actually I had 2 zipped slideshows totaling more than 40MB alone and because I sort of paniced I removed any template type or practice type files etc that were in the folder but not on the site. So you are saying that this was the correct method of checking? The block on the Telus webspace wasn't working correctly then I guess?

Yes, that's the way I would check, the difference in sizes should be negligible.
As to what went wrong... either your folder contents were not the same as the contents on the server, or the block wasn't working correctly. I can't tell from here. :)

Have you tried actually viewing some of the new pages that put you over the limit?
It could be that the block works based on the date uploaded along with file size.

To check a page's (or site's) stats, go to:
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/
and enter the URL. It will analyze the images, html, css, links, scripts, etc and catagorize them, and offer suggestions and recommendations for optimization.
If your 'free host' only offers you 10-MB, get another free host like:
www.awardspace.com
this place offers ad-free/banner-free FREE 200-MB personal space for your use. FREE offer supports *mySql and *php, btw.
Paid-for options have additional perks. :)

Oh my
How can they offer all this for free? Why does anyone use paid hosts? Is there a catch?

"free" hosting always has some way that they make money from providing it. Most use advertising but there are other ways that they can make money from your site.
When you have "free" hosting the hosting provider makes the money that you could have made from the site if you paid for the hosting.

I'm unclear what you mean by the hosting provider makes the money that you could have made from the site if you paid for the hosting??
What does this mean?
Also, I may have asked this before but if I am simply building the site and have the files on my computer, I am not not actually hosting am I. I still have to upload to that hosting site. Or, am I the host and I upload to the server?

The larger majority of people whom contract with a hosting provider such as awardspace.com, eventually NEED more than 200-MB (one video file can eat all that up!), and if I were dealt a fair deal and were left alone (no spam ads, no 'time to upgrade to a premium package yet?' offers from 'free host'), the freebie recipient (such as myself) often 'buys' a package.
My 200MB FREE space is adequate for my current needs. I don't even use the MySql or *php yet that my free package offers... but if I go 'business' and require, say, *cgi, more space and expect 'traffic', or some heavy dataase requirements then yes, I would upgrade (pay cash money) to the host that gave me the most. -It's the promise of my subscription that they are retaining with their generous free hosting.
If one of every 30 or 40 people whom start off hosting 'for free' eventually upgrade to a premium package with same host, -they have made money. Myself, I am sure that I am an unusual patron... I have been using my free host for about a year and haven't yet had the need to purchase an upgrade. What I particularly love about awardspace.com is that they leave me alone... no 'friendly reminders' to upgrade, no 'special package deal we thought you'd be interested in' offers...
but when I am ready to buy premium, I'll go there. :)

Thankyou for the clarification.
Do you need to have a registered Domain Name to use the free webspace?
I am in British Columbia, Canada. Not sure where most of you are from but does it matter about hosting with a company in the US and is awardspace.com a US company?

No, -you are given a 'sub-directory address', so your URL would look like:
http://your-name.awardspace.com
whereas "your-name" is a sub-directory of "awardspace.com". -It's a small compromise, but I love awards AND space, so their name is kinda kewl...

Oh, that was scarey!
I went to awardspace to set up a free hosting account, got my username and password and proceeded to check it out and use the space with just a sub domain for now but as soon as I logged in every page I went to my Antivirus program told me that it was an extremely website and to not go there again. That makes me a bit nervous about these so called free things. Don't you ever get that?

CallingID has no problem as identifying the site as Verified (http://db.callingid.com/rating/siteinfo.aspx?domain=awardspace.com). Maybe the Anti-virus program (?) needs updating of its whitelist.
