Character Counter

When using the PM's it is hard to tell how many characters are left, the script your using tells you how many characters your over when you try to preview or post but not counting and displaying the remaining count as you type in the text box.

Any chance of a counter?

I had written one for the last version of the forum software but some members with slower computers complained that it slowed them down too much, so I axed it.

I fail to see how such a simple piece of code that shows how many characters are left can slow even the slowest PC down.

What were they running? ZX81's (http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/computers/zx81/zx81.htm) ?

Beats me. I never noticed it on any of my PCs but enough users complained to make it worth removing, and so few members said they found it useful that it seemed expendable.

What if it was a toggled button to turn it on for those who want it and off by default for those who dont? or a check box like those in the options box below the quick reply?

Yeah, that might work, but I think it'd have to be off by default. suppose I could cookie the setting though so it'd be remembered.
