drop down or pop up menu

I have my own images of buttons I would like to use in a script for drop down or pop up menus. How can this be done?

use th eimage buttons as background images for the menus.
Oh btw..this is the possible kind of answer for a very general question such as yours.

I have tried that and it doesn't change anything. I end up with the same image that was initially there.
