Hi,
I am wondering if there is any such thing as a content managment system (CMS) that will allow me to sell access to articles?
I want to a basic version of my articles, and a paid ‘pro’ version.

Yes, it's called syndication. It's what the news bureaus (AP, UPI, etc.) do.

No, what I mean is to take payment from individual readers to access an article.
Yes, there are paid content sites, like you're talking about. However, you might want to read this (http://www.dmnews.com/cms/dm-news/search-marketing/34111.html). It's aover a year old but the question remains, what would be that important that I would want to pay for it? It might be feasible for scientific organizations, etc.

The content is not important to this thread. However, here is my idea: I want to charge readers for ‘the little extra’. I want to give away a free edition of the article, and have an extended version with more in‐depth information for a small fee.
The problem is the content and payment/subscription managment system.
Gotcha. You might check there (http://www.contentmanager.net/itguide/product_comparison_cms.html) out. Or something like a subscription management (http://www.iventa.com/Membership-Subscription-Management-System.aspx) script.

What is the HTML editor your using? If your using Dreamweaver, they have a tutorial on how to resrict pages here (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/auth_users.html)
On the resrict page, you can have a paypal button to pay for access for the article, then once you pay, you can add another user to your database, then volia! Pay per view article

I would recommend Joomla CMS with some subscription addons.
