I am looking for a book that would cover this material not from the perspective of someone new to HTML. I know HTML and have been using it for years but would like a book that would help me convert my current web based application to the XHTML 4.0 standard (in my case transitional and not strict). I am looking for 3 books really on various topics and please do not respond if you are an author. I'm looking for a unbiased review.

That ain't gonna happen because Xhtml is only at version 1.1 and you shouldn't use it.

Thank you for the response... can you expand on your statement. I should not use XHTML or XHTML1.0 specifically? There are several books that do exist for XHTML4 from what I've seen on Amazon.

Then grab one and tell us when it's going to be published. I'm guessing about 2017. :) The XHTML specs are not simple linear upgrades like the HTML specs are. Unless you're really using the XML I'd recommend you go with HTML 4.01 Strict. If you just feel the unbearable need for XML then use XHTML 1.0 Strict.

With the XHTML2 standard still in the early development stage someone would need to be a time traveller to be able to predict what the XHTML4 standard will contain.

Are you sure you don't mean HTML4 rather than XHTML4 as they are two entirely different things with HTML4 being a current web standard while I think Ray is being optomistic in suggesting that XHTML4 will be out within 10 years. Given the lack of support for XHTML1 I suspect that twenty years will be closer to the mark and there certainly will not be any books on development of that standard starts.

Unless you understand the difference between HTML and XHTML properly you should stick with HTML at the current time as currently Microsoft has no plans to add XHTML support into IE8.

felgall, thank you. Yes I stated that incorrectly.
