Hello,:)

I know my question is a bit confusing. I'm a newbie and we have a motorcycle website (http://marksmotos.com). I've been doing a lot of reading in web advertising and search engines (not too much though) Our forte is print advertising. I read in one of the blogs that if you have 3 or more websites and you link them to your major website, there is a big chance that you will end up in first page of google or msn or any other search engine. Is there any truth to this.

An example is http://cycletrader.com

Thanks so much!

Grace

It takes a lot more than three links to end up on the front page. In addition, the links also have weight, e.g., are they the same subject matter, are they considered "authorities", etc. Also, there are more than links to consider. You also have to develop the keywords in your Web pages, content itself is important.

I really appreciate the advice. We will look into other aspects as well. By the way, I have learned so much already from HTML to Seach Engine techniques so far in this site.

MORE POWER!

The concept is popularly known as link building. Every webmaster does it in one form or another.

Thanks Innominds :)

Can you give me some quick advice (even long advice will be greatly appreciated) on how can I do link building?

I have searched some link building techniques and most of them requires fee. We are just starting and we're on a budget.

Any suggestions?

Thanks! :)

Just be careful not to do anything which will get you black listed.

Google has a lot of systems in place to detect black hat techniques trying to abuse its page rank system.

Linking your own sites to each other do help based on the other sites page ranks and depending on what content they contain.

If the sites are related content and have good page ranks with quality content this will boost your sites rank.

The best search engine optimization comes from marking up correctly and having quality content which is related to your site.

Also if you are working with sales it is worth looking into pay per click.

Good afternoon:

I think it would be worthwhile to include a bit of text on each site pointing out to the viewers that visiting www.xxxxxxx.com would be worthwhile if interested in blah blah

And visiting www.yyyyyy.com if interested in blah blah etc etc

In this way you can encourage the viewers to move over to the other sites and these links will be noted by the search engines and add or subtract from the ranking of each site as appropriate.

I would avoid links without a bit of explanation as to why they might be of interest.

I have read someplace that incoming links (i.e. from your 3 sites to your main site) create bonus points for the main site and decrease the ranking of the 3 sites or words to that effect. If all sites are linked to each other it should create a merry-go-round and all sites would benefit. What the heck they all belong to you in any case.

Another benefit is that it ensures the smaller sites are found by search engines.

Search engines optimization is a complicated business because they don't want you to know the secret of being number one as nasty people will cheat - the search engines want number one to be there because it fills the request in the search string.

I won't pay anyone to do this as they have no more influence with the search engines then any of us do - of course if you are lazy, don't do any research etc then you might pay someone for some input.

Cheers

Thanks Jack and knowj!

I really appreciate the inputS. As a matter of fact we will try to re-design our "Favorite Links" page.

When we developed it, we have not yet heard or know what "SEO" is, we just put the links there because it's either they are friends of mark (the owner) or he had visited these sites. Some did request their sites and we have not yet visited their rankingS yet ( I guess, we were not interested before and don't know the effects of linking to a low ranking website.)

It's been only few weeks since we have known our ranking and it's importance, though the webmaster (the designer of the site have put the google rank at the bottom our site).

Thanks to this forum and this site, I was awaken and have learned a lot. I guess, it's not too late to correct our mistakes yet.

I have called couple of SEO companies and boy o boy, some of their quotations are really out of our budget. If you've visited the site, we are not even earning revenue yet, so I don't think it's right for us to spend another penny for the advertisement.

I've been doing a lot of research and it's fun ( I guess I have to forget my photoshop for awhile) :) There's just too much to learn though :)

Just one more question, does anyone here knows about "widgets"?

MORE POWER TO YOUR SITES!

SEO companies who promise big results are just cons. If you do hire a web SEO company you want to get one which specializes in paid Ad's such as pay per click on google.

I work with someone who specializes in this and he really knows what he is on about. He doesn't go around promising huge natural results tho but with pay per click you can pretty much guarantee conversions

Hi there,
In my opinion, for what it's worth, the best way to ensure being noticed is this....

1: Proper page development - Make sure that your web pages are properly formated and worded to ad the most weight to them in relation to your business target i.e. keywords and target audience. Make each page properly different, don't use the same meta description and keywords for each page. Each page offers it's own unique information so take advantage of that.

2: Social Networking - Places like myspace, tagworld and the like, give you an opportunity to socialize with others from all over the world or local to you depending on your desire, posting again another web presence for your business for others to see. You can link back to your site from these sites as well, giving your site more exposure to both search engines and others that float around these social sites browsing through the Internet.

3: Web Link Directories - The Internet is full of both free and paid internet directories. Basically these are miniature search engines that house a database of websites, some are niche directories that cater to only certain subjects some of these may benefit you, and others are general directories. It is a good idea to submit to these directories, it gives your website more exposure. Providing reciprocal links to some of these also will help ad some weight to your url.

4: Blogging/eHowto - Posting Blogs or going someplace such as eHowto and writing articles on subjects you are familiar with, or getting articles others have written on your particular topics (after attaining permission of course) and attaching them to your sight, listing the articles that are attached or located at your sight on places such as digg.com or reddit or the like.

5: Forums - Web forums are probably one of the better places to get noticed. Many forums allow you to place a signature on your posts, whenever you post to the forum the signature is automatically added to the bottom of your post. Some of the forums, as a matter of fact, a great deal of them get indexed by search engines making it entirely possible that every post you make will get indexed by an engine, with your signature(link and short 1 line description of your website). Just be careful not to make any statements or talk about things that may be damaging to your business as big brother is watching and all will see.

This doesn't by far cover everything you can do, but hopefully gives some good ideas, and it's all on the up and up, not balckhat type tactics needed and no worry of getting black balled as long as you stay honest and ethical with it. Respect the rules of other sites and forums.

Hope this helps and makes a little sense

Merhaba (hello) from Turkey,
Grace thanks for opening the subject, and all the others thanks for your supports. This is what i was looking for, the ethical way of moving up my rank in seach engines (by the way, i am soooo new in these things and i didn't even host my site already).
My question is, i've read somewhere about "making good site maps" to have a higher rank in search engines? What is a "a site map", and how can i make a good site map? another one is where can i get good info about meta tags and its contents? Thanks in advance.....
P.S Excuse my English for any possible mistakes, since i am not living in an English speaking country :)

This is known as backlinks, the more backlinks you have to your site the better. If they come from .orgs and .edus or even .govs then you will get even a better boost in the SEO.
You can find other ways to promote your website on search engines here: http://forums.seochat.com/search-engine-optimization-28/

Good afternoon:

Check out the following link for details on quite a few tools offered by Google for increasing search engine visibility especially site maps:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html

If you sign up you will be given some code to paste into your home page so Google can verify that you own/have access to the site. Once started the various steps seem fairly straight forward.

You can also check with Yahoo as they have something similar.

I downloaded a program named Softplus GSiteCrawler which seems easy to use and produces site maps in the style required by Google and Yahoo . I elected to upload the site maps this programs produced using FTP rather then automatically as it will do.

Been messing with this for several months and it seems that Google have crawled all my pages. I didn't update the site map for a while but did so yesterday on the assumption that it can't hurt.

Cheers

Jack
