I am not sure if this is the right place to seek help, if not pardon me for posting this here, but i feel u can guide me. I completed by BE in computer science in 2005 but after that i couldn’t take up a job till now due some personal reasons. Now that i am ready to take up a job. I applied to some companies here in India to work as a web developer, but all of them got rejected saying u got a big gap from the time you finished your education. Its true that i have become a little outdated as far as my skill set is considered. I am very keen on pursuing a career as a web developer. So could u please guide to upgrade my skill set to the current industry requirements (which i am completely unaware of)…like the languages, technologies, or any kind of certifications if required. How can i get started?? If you could help me … it will be of great help.. continuous reject at interviews is making me feel very low…just need some help very badly….Hoping to get a reply.

I would like to add that I am familiar (beginner level - all of them self learnt)with PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript. As part of my degree i have learnt languages like C, C++, Java, VB, VC++ And also Oracle in DB , but these r little rusted in my memory.

Deeps, do you really believe what they say to you?

You finished your education on 2005. Now it is 2007. Didn't you realize that objection was simply ludicrious, fictitious - and i am using an euphemism?

Listen, Deeps: the idea that you ought to be hired, is a misconception. And those who interview you, many times already have their candidate: they are merely filling in a legal necessity so they can say, see we respected the law we led interviews - instead the guy was already unofficially hired - among a set of relatives.

Really Deeps, you must do nothing to improve your skills. You must just quit believeing those who interview you have any competence whatsoever at spotting talent. They have none.

Have a look at these:
10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job (http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/07/10-reasons-you-should-never-get-a-job/)

PROUDLY UNEMPLOYED: THE JOBLESS WORLD OF THE TALENTFUL BEGGAR (http://www.fullposter.com/blog.php?id=1&topic=13&start=0&fstart=0)

Take heart man. Talent has nothing to do with getting a job.
If you really want to be hired (which I counsel against) then make sure you have no talent and no education: you will look like a lamb and a piece of cake, no interviewer will feel challenged by your presemce, and you will spend the rest of your life with an average salary, drinking beer on sundays and wondering why your partner goes out so often!

The best way to improve your skills is this: either work on your own as a freelancer, or if you want to be hired at all costs, cast away education. Firms want trained parrots, not education.

good luck man!

You probably need feedback on what could have gone wrong during the interview. May be nothing, at first thoughts. But you can just re-live the entire experience and find out what it was. Be honest to yourself.

Secondly, if possible do specify a reason for your break (which isn't too big, actually), if it isn't too personal or if there is no harm in sharing.

There are quite a few famous job portals, where you can put up your resume. Hiring is low now a days in the big IT cos, but that shouldn't let you down. Darn! you are a B. E. - you have more importance (no offence meant).
Also, you probably may explore the option of finding out how you can be at least partially skilled with "Web 2.0" skills. (given the hype surrounding it).

One word: networking.

Find ways to meet people in the business in a non-business environment, such as any local users' groups in any computer-related areas that interest you. You can also make on-line contacts in various forums such as this one. Basically look for any opportunity to get to know people in the business, and let them get to know you. These don't have to be the people that do the hiring, as jobs often go to people that get internal referrals from current employees. That's the main "secret": if a hiring manager looks at 5 applications that are all roughly equal in their qualifications, but one of those five has a recommendation from an employee in that company, that one application is 99% likely to be the one that gets the first job offer.
