Hi Guys,

I plan on purchasing a dedicated server soon on which my goal is to host multiple websites. The problem is that I know how to host multiple websites on a server when there is more than one IP address available. However, the server provider says that they do not offer multiple IP addresses for sale or per server, therefore I am stuck with the single IP address.

Here is where I run into a problem. I don't know how to host multiple websites on a single IP address. From what my limited research has come up with I have to mess around with the DNS records, and I think somewhere it said that I have to have my server configured as a DNS server and what not. Essentially I am confused.

So, here I am looking for help from you guys. If any one knows of articles or tutorials or something that will explain to me how to set up my server to run multiple websites under one IP address, I would really appreciate it if you could share them with me.

Thanks in advance!

You can assign multiple names to the same IP and the web server can sort the requests out to defined virtual servers. The mechanism for virtual hosts via name is essentially identical to the one for IP addresses. Obviously the details are different for different web servers but we do name-based virtual servers here on both Apache and IIS 6.

Is there an article that you direct me to on the virtual servers?
