My idea is that I want to use my Psp (playstation portable) to let me use Google maps offline (Just my local are would be fine), by somehow saving the data I need onto my memory stick as a web page, and accessing the file through the psp's web browser offline. Is it possible to do something like this with any of the map sites????
Hopefully I don't sound like an idiot here.
Thanks!

i highly doubt it. google maps is an AJAX application. that means it makes calls to google's servers in order to fulfill your data requets. if you remove googles server's from the picture, you've lost the map functionality.

yeah but it would be alot easier to look at a map.

What about another one of the map services like, yahoo or something?

i know the new functionality yahoo uses is AJAX as well. the best you can do is go to the old yahoo maps, make a static page, and save it to your psp. but it will look exactly the same as it does when you save it. static.
if you use any map system that loads informaiton on the fly (like when you hit an arrow), then youre sending a call to a server to get information that isnt yet available to. and you cant do that offline of course.

Usually when saving a web page, not all of the web page and images get saved. You can set your browser to save web page complete when you use save as, but if it doesn't display afterwards in your browser with the local page, then your play station will have a heck of a time with it.
If you can just get the map image(s), you could try using that only. Interesting idea with the PSP though.

Is there anyway to, maybe start at a point on the map and kinda do a fly through to gather the info i want from the server. and somehow save all that to make into a flash file to view on the psp's browser?
Im sorry for being dumb here i just thought it would be really nice to have considering were going on vacation in a few weeks.

I was thinking maybe I could use a bunch of screen shots of just the maps, and make then into a flash file. making my own interactive map kinda? or is there an easier way? The psp can read flash, play wma and stuff so its pretty capable for a toy.
I dont really know how to use flash though to make stuff i have flash 8 but never messed around with it. Is there any good tutorials?

short answer, no. there is too much complicated scripting to reverse engineer the process. im sure if you paid someone enough (if they are able), something could be drawn up, but theres just too much going against you. id recommend getting a GPS system :)

Flash 8 Tutorials Adobe Search (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=flash+8+tutorials&action=Search)
I don't use flash either so I don't know if there is an easier way to do this since you want to make them interactive.

The other thing you probably need to consider is that while copying a map for your own use will probably be okkay, copying it and allowing others to see it will be a breach of the map owner's copyright and could end up costing you a lot of money.

Google has it so you can set up their service on your phone (http://www.google.com/gmm/index.html). The service is made to be used, printed and distributed to those that need to use the map you made. You might send out wedding invitations with a Google map enclosed for people to use to get to your place. You can even add Google maps to your web site (http://www.google.com/apis/maps/gallery/mapsAPIProducts.html#utm_source=maps_home).

Did you check out about how to set up Google's API and see if you could adapt it to the PSP? It has a lot of information on how to set it up for just like Google's Map page so you may have to take your time going through the info. I managed to put the map up on one of my pages and get the lat/long to show my area, but that's it so far. LOL
