Pound sign with UTF-8 encoding

Hi. I have a page with just the pound sign in (£). If i encode the page to UTF-8, when run through a browser, the character turns into a square. Removing the UTF-8 encoding returns it to a pound sign.

Does anyone know how to use a pound sign with UTF-8 encoding?
