I have ordered a new laptop with Vista, and as I wait for it to arrive, I am contemplating whether or not to install XP. I am already well aware of the negativity towards it. I am worried about a few things:

That nearly all of my games probably won't work.
That it will make unnecessary use of too many system resources.
It doesn't seem to offer anything special that I particularly need.

I will have a look at it, but I assume that I will want to install XP instead. Presumably it is far easier to upgrade to Vista once the time is right, so that isn't a problem is it?

Now, on the issue of reinstalling XP, I have read that Vista does not allow you to downgrade in such a way. Some of the notes I have read on getting XP to successfully install over Vista were just a little over my head.

So here is my new system spec:

------------------------------------------------
Rock Xtreme 770

Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0GHz
100GB 7200rpm SATA
2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT 512MB (DX10)

Please note this is a laptop.
------------------------------------------------

I have never installed an OS, and do not have much experience with this sort of thing as I have never put together a machine myself. So can anybody provide specific instructions for installing XP instead of Vista?

I understand there are specific things I need to know/do regarding the SATA but I'm not sure what (or why) and that I need to completely wipe the HDD before I can install XP - I don't know how to go about doing that either.

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

You will most likely have to wipe the harddrive and install WinXP on the blank drive. You will have to purchase a license to XP, even though you're getting Vista with the machine.
