if you sign up for a paypal account and depending on how many cart items you have it's easy to only use paypal for the shopping cart. It's also a good method to cut your teeth on.

Paypal becomes your merchant account...

Sign up for the paypal account and you'll see "merchant services" and from there we can help you build what your looking for.

Actually you have to have it linked to an electronic payment gateway (LinkPoint, Payflow, Authorize.net/Cybersource, etc) or an Internet Payment Service Provider (IPSP) / Third Party Processor (3PP).

How Does a Credit Card Transaction Get Processed? (http://www.totalbusiness.com/Default.aspx?tabid=5527) might help some. Most gateways will offer a free test account. It is also important to check their customer service. Some have gone to online only (i.e. email / chat) while others offer telephone support as well.

I'm also interested in this. Problem is, that I run a website for a non-profit organization and what little we make, we need. Cheapest thing I could find is a Paypal Gateway, this thing: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_payflow-gateway-overview-outside.

Are there any cheaper options?

Well heres the deal with us at least. We handle small registration fees of either $5 or $10. Now, we are currently using a system called PeopleWare with works with software called PCCharge. We pay about $2k a year for a license. We are having a problem with PeopleWare and considering dumping it. But then we'd have no way to process the credit card registrations. We get over 12k registrations a year. Now with just 30 cents per transaction that brings us up to $3.6k a year. More than we're already spending. Since we're non-profit we don't have this kind of money.

The PayFlow or w/e it is allows for for 1k transactions per month, which brings us up to the 12k registrations per year give or take. Per month, it only costs $60 so per year it would only be $720 plus the one time set up price.

So, any ideas? Would that be the best way to go you think?

Depending on what the registration is Sporg (http://www.sporg.com/) might be useful.

Well, how much does Sporg cost, any idea? I've been writing my own registration system for a little while now, and I think it would be easier that way. That why if something needed quick fixing, I could do it right away without having to wait a week for the company to get back to us. Had some problems with PeopleWare so I'm somewhat untrusting...

You would need to contact them on pricing. I am not a reseller or associated with that organization (otherwise, that would be considered spamming / self-advertising).

I am guessing they have some taylor made scripts already and then if you need more customization, they would of course charge you appropriately.
