I'm asking this question on a few different sites to get a variety of opinions.

Our company has a website that is template-driven meaning I can't do much besides edit the custom pages I build. The code's a mess, there are robots.txt files blocking many of my pages and I can't build effective landing pages.

Because of this, I plan on redeveloping the front end as I do this kind of stuff on the side. I only know about designing a front end though and need someone else to do the database and any scripting.

The problem for us is that we are in survival mode and can't afford the full scope right now. We could derive a lot of benefit just from redesigning and moving to a new host.

Can we do this short-term project without sabotaging our long term plans of incorporating a database that can communicate with our loan origination software?

Thanks for your time.
