Dear all,

I am currently attempting to convert an image that I have on my computer into an image that can be used for wallpaper.

The problem that I am encountering is the fact that the image is currently of dimensions that are different from those needed for wallpaper.

I wont the image to fill the entire screen once, (i.e. not tiled) and I don’t want to stretch it to fit the screen as this distorts the image.

Does anyone know what dimensions are needed to fill the screen entirely, I have a 17" monitor and am running windows XP.

Also does anyone have any advice on how to resize the image to the new dimensions without warping it? - I understand that the only way is to trim the edges but how do I do it with exact precision.

Wallpap.

The simplest image viewer/editer I've ever used is Irfanview. It's free, too. Search for it on Google.

It has an option to convert an image to use as wallpaper.

I'm not sure that any one particular size is right, because the resolution settings will determine what size the image needs to be.

As far as resizing the image, going to a smaller size is no problem. Making an image larger will introduce distortion, and there is no way around that. The greater the increase in image size, the more distortion you are going to have. Programs like Photoshop may help you to minimize the problem a little, but you cannot get the same image quality if you have to increase its size.

Hope that helps.

Aronya1, Thanks for the help.

I will search for Irfanview and give it a shot.

The only other query that I have is how do I determine the image size given that I am running the resolution at 1280*1024 pixels on a 17" monitor.

I am more interested in getting the right relative dimensions as in the ratio of the screen height to the screen width than an absolute value of the image size.

Any advice. Wallpap

If the image is larger than 1280 by 1024, you don't have to do anything to it to use it as a wallpaper. If it is smaller, you will have to increase its size, & you will lose resolution quality.

You can resize images with Irfanview & the program will retain the perspective. It also has options to resize an image to several standard sizes.

any windows platform:

right click on desktop, under wallpaper click "Browse" and find the image. set it as wallpaper. deselect the tiled and stretch checkboxes under the browse button. there you go. and if you wanted to shape it to fit all screens you should set it to 800x600, if your just using it, shape it how you want then do the above directions. it will automatically center.
