This is my first post here. I am uber noob at websites but decided to sign up in order to learn some more and seek help when I need it. This community seems really active and I like that.

Ok so anyways..

I just designed and put up a temp website for my business until I design the real site with shopping cart (Just thinking about it hurts my head). Anyways just wanted an opinion on the design and feel, it shouldn't be up for long. Please refrain from any negative comments and if you have any questions then let me know..that's all I'll say on that.

I know it's not much but..

Please please please don't put any message in the status bar (i.e. Reserve Your Spot in Heaven Now). The status bar is there for just that, to let the users know the 'status' and because I would not consider "Reserve Your Spot in Heaven NOW" a status, then I would be inclined to say leave it out. As for the rest of it......um, there's nothing there really except a countdown and a mailing list thing, that's not a design Maybe I missed the short window of time that it would be up like you said. Throw something up their and we'll help you out with critiquing it.

Also, good thing you came here as a newbie because now you can learn a lot of basic stuff without having to make all the mistakes first and figure it out on your own later. If you're really serious about good web design then you need to look at two things above all else:

TABLE-less designs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tableless_web_design)
Valid HTML (http://validator.w3.org/)

P.S. I like the colors of your site-to-be ;).....

Come back if you have any questions

Refrain from negative comments? Are you just wanting congrats.? That doesn't seem to be very objective.

When I click on the clock, the code shows ---- as twiggy asked, is it supposed to be that way?

I don't understand the website's focus (is it a fan site, ticket site, what?), but don't want to sign up for your mailing list in order to get into the site. Others won't either. Provide content without demands. ;)

Lastly, do you have permission to use trademarked material? You might check on that.\

By negative comments I mean about the site subject and what you may or may not think it is about, but I should put up some info i know so people aren't confused. The status bar thing, I guess that was part of the countdown, I downloaded it and it was in the script so i should prob take i tout, i hate those things anyways, and didn't notice it. the mailing list would be to receive updates when teh sites launches, since there is nothing on it yet, but i should put up more info so people know that. The clock shouldn't be clickable, idunno how to fix that. Also thanks for the links to those two sites, will definately help!

What trademarked material is on that site?

Thanks for the comments i'll be sure to read up some more and post a link to my finished site when i'm done :P

towards the bottom - you have "reserve a spot in heaven TM 2007"

unless you've filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (and have been approved) you can't put a TM there. you can put Copyright 2007... but not TM.

correct me if i'm wrong - but you can put a copyright on any site with original content/images and if it's created by yourself. you can copyright any original work.

anyway, the graphics are nice on the site, but as other have said, i have no idea what the site is - and with that said, no one is going to sign up for a mailing list unless you define what the site is (but i know that it's a work in progress - so we'll ignore that issue for now).

A little bright. No idea of the details of your site. Please place some content on site. Then I can give more feedback. Thanks

Ok guys I finished and re-uploaded our final page and it looks good on my comp on firefox and ie, as well as a lot of others, but a few computers are having problems viewing the page.

www.reserveaspotinheaven.com

The common problem among the mess ups is the red 'about us' image gets stretched super long, the three packages at the bottom are tiered, and sometimes there's a break in the top header image. Any ideas? Is it the html?

the layout and graphics are nice.

you have a few HTML (http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reserveaspotinheaven.com%2Findex.htm)and CSS (http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css21&warning=0&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reserveaspotinheaven.com%2Findex.htm)errors, that you may take a look at.

and just one thing - have you registered "Reserve Your Spot in Heaven" with the Patent and Trademark Office?... if not, you can't use the TM after it.

I actually really like it. Graphics are lovely.

Can't imagine who your market is...! but I like!

One thing about the trademark. I dunno what your thinking but you don't need to register your mark in order to have a 'TM' next to it. Right now since we are starting out we are establishing our use of the mark in a legitimate way (claiming it), hence the 'TM'. When we decide it's worth trademarking we will pay the thousands to get it 'Registered' and then the 'TM' at the end will become an 'R' with a circle around it. Everything is perfectly fine. Id advice you check out www.uspto.gov for more info if you're confused.

Thanks for the comments. It's weird cause only some IE browsers stretch the images super funky. I tested the site on this w3c.org thing and it came up with a buncha errors but i'm not really sure how to fix this....

OK i redid the page but i'm still having problems with image stretching in internet explorer. Does anyone have any idea? If the images get stretched all funky and the user navigates to another page and then comes back, the images usually correct themselves and look fine. Firefox always loads up the page fine (as far as i've seen).

Again the site is www.reserveaspotinheaven.com

Does it look too much like a 'sales pitch'? If it does, is it a negative or positive thing? I don't want it to come off as a total sales pitch , so what do you guys think?

I found the site very clear and to the point. IE6 looked like hell like you said but I don't have an answer for that at the moment.

I am on the other hand very curious as to if you are actually getting any sales? I mean, this has to be the most obscure way of making money. I'm not religious but I was somehow offended by the whole idea. I think this could be a funny addition to some church's website though. :)

Haha thanks for the comments. I can't talk about sales but the site has only been up for a little more then a week, and we just redid everything. I'm glad you thought it was clear because that was our main problem before redoing it, and it still needs some touch ups.

But back to the problem at hand. On the validation tool it says the doc type isn't a valid xhtml transitional something or other. I guess I have to declare what type of document it is? I don't know what or how to figure that out. I'm going through the codes though one by one so hopefully that will change something but I don't know what to do about DOCTYPE

I recommend using HTML 4.01 Strict.

Hey, there could be errors in that very first magic line -- the DOCTYPE line. IF there is an error or broken doctype line, what standard browsers do is: they simply switch from the standards mode to "quirks" mode of operation. In quirks mode, they imitate older browsers. So, this must be correctly fixed.

For your Info, I'm writing a series of blog posts called "the making of a webdev" at http://thanix.info/blog and yesterday's topic was just that "DOCTYPES". I'm planning to discuss much more each day, through the series. May be you could follow that, if u wish to.

I already fixed the problem guys. I went through and the site is validated. The problem though was with the image tags. I originally had the height and width specified and when i removed those , the images loaded perfect in all browsers. :) Good information though for future projects.

Do you have permission from GOD ? Is Vatican approve this ?

Where's Heaven ??

I do know where is Hell !

I've been there many times from all these programming works !! Need a full fire-extinguisher.

Yes, we have direct orders from above to do this. We are the only official and authorized body allowed to help get people get into Heaven. Check out the FAQ for more info ;)

I know what you mean about Hell, which is why you want to reserve your spot now before it's too late!

Thanks for the help guys
