Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : getting started
this is just a general question for everyone, especially those whose carrer is webdesign.
how did you get started? was it self study? did you take college courses and end up with a degree? maybe vo-tech?
ive been mostly just checking books out at the library and reading them. ive made a couple sites but only for practice i have not put them on the web.
also are most webdesign jobs contract type or consultant type, or is there a demand for these positions within companies?
thanks

Are you looking for a job as a companies webmaster or something? Or do you want to do it freelance? What technologies do you know so far?
well i never really thought about it much, guess i would like to work for someone eventually. i just didnt know whether i needed a college degree or could do it by self study. i have read a couple books on HTML. the most recent is "Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages 2nd edition by Dave Taylor".
also i have been doing some of the tutorials on HTMLGoodies.com and W3Schools.com. i have been doing this for the past 3 months and im getting decent on the HTML and just starting to get into CSS. i havent done any Javascript or pearl or anything like that.
our youth baseball organization has a website and the person who maintains it is an engineer for the government. his son also is a pitcher on the team i coach. thats how i got interested in this stuff by just talking to him. it has been interesting and looks like something i might want to give a shot. just trying to figure out a course of action.
thanks for your reply's

Dont expect to start maken the big bucks until you know server side technology like ASP PHP ASP.NET CGI JSP or SHTML. Thats when you get out of that dime a dozen to a quarter a dozen range.

htmlgoodies is out of date so leave that site for good and use www.w3schools.com . you can also just check out what people post on here and try to figure out how to solve their problem so that you will now know how to do it on your own plus you've hhelped them so it's kinda kewl.
*waits for the forums to catch up and post what he just wrote cause he writes at 130 wpm and the forum cant keep up with him so i get to watch it all write like its writing itself*
Kinda kewl actually.
But mostly books are good. html is involved but i dont see how you spent 3 months learning it. unless you keep putting it off or something? just use w3schools like i said and watch these forums. thats how i'v been learning.(started at beginning of summer and now know a good lot about html css and javascript) My problem is I don't use books so i miss out on a lot of content because www.w3schools.com just tells you the main things. not everything.
ive only been at this about 3 months on again off again. whenever i can get on computer between my son's gaming breaks and internet breaks. LOL
so im guessing by the replies that one can basically teach themselves that you dont really need the peace of paper from the institutes of higher learning and can basically save probably 15 grand by just reading books from library and doing the tutorials on W3Cschools.com

yes you can save yourself 15K but you really should take an online course if you wanna do it professionaly. much faster and a lot less books that way=P
