positioning

i am working on a text flip navigation system - www.oneweekofdays.com/testerfolder/master/index.html - everything works ok except that i want to get the flips to position in the same area as the links -- ie if the link is 'board' and the flip is 'messageboard' then i want the flip to be positioned 3 or 4 character spaces further left than the link so that when the i move my mouse over the link and the flip occurs, the text seems only to have widened; not to have extended to the right --- this is very hard to explain so have a look at the page - a picture paints a thousand words !!! :o

i would put every 'column' of links within another div or span or something, secure the span or divs positioning, and then make the text-align center so the letter-spacing spaces it and re-centers it within thespan or div. heres an example:
