Just been chattin to our IT support, he was suggesting laptops for a colleague,
he mentioned a good dell for about £750.
I said my laptop cost about that much, he looked supprised cos my lappy looks quite nice, he said where did u get it from.
I said Apple, he kringed and said "well u get what u pay for".
Anyone know of a non-apple laptop that does what a MacBook Pro can do for less than £800?
Why are people so scared of Macs?

Oh, no, not another Apple versus [insert OS of choice here] thread! :p
If you want a logical, rational, non-emotional reply, don't hold your breath. Just take a look at the world around you: People as a whole are driven by prejudices and biases, many/most of which are founded more on emotion, mis-information, brainwashing, and a built-in instinct to never admit they were wrong and also that they belong to the "chosen" group.
What's my laptop? A Dell Windows Vista machine. Why? Not because I think it's technically better (or worse) than anything else; it's just convenient for what I need to do with it and what I'm used to using, and the price was right (I purchased a refurbished machine). It works fine for what I need, and I feel no particular need to change to something else, nor to defend what I have. If Apple works for you and is in the price range you are willing to pay for it, that's all the reason you need to buy it. Subjective comparisons to anything else would be next to useless, and even objective comparisons are of limited meaning unless they could prove beyond a doubt that you would be clearly more satisfied if you changed.

Good points. -I am rather anti-M$, -yet I use their products half the time (I am currently on Linux today). I'd never upgrade to VISTA and chances are, I'd not have nearly enough hardware to meet the needs anyway, and would experience upgrade problems to try to rectify the situation.
I've talked to people whom have 'new' computers with VISTA pre-installed, -and they LOVE it! Well good on 'em. I have talked some some people whom have upgraded computers older than mine to VISTA and (they claim) so far, -no problems...
I'd personally probably not buy a Mac as a first or primary computer but I'd sure like to have one as a secondary. You know what they say, -'once you go Mac you never go back'. I'd consider a Mac.
Anyone berating a OS (or, pc) that is 'non-Windows', -take note that they probably are biased favorably towards Windows/M$ and to that, no reasoning with them is possible. For those that love Mac pc/s (or Linux OS/s), -no explanation is even necessary.

I've not used Apple computers since ... well ... so long ago I can't even remember. Then, you could not find any of the programs I needed/wanted for Apple. Everything was PC for Windows or DOS. AT least were I was. My bias, and I that's exactly what it is, was born out of necessity and is nourished by the security and comfort that comes from familiarity.
My sister, however, swears by her Macs and will use nothing else if given a choice.

I wouldn't buy a Mac simply because I'd feel like a tool bag everywhere I went. I have no problems with Apple, they make great products, just the fact that all the "Mac" people are so ridiculously passionate about it, I don't want to be associated with that.
I use Ubuntu at home and XP at work. I like XP, but once I installed Ubuntu I never used it anymore. I don't think I would upgrade to Vista either, a bunch of my IT buds haven't had much good to say about it.
I use an WinXP - HP model that I paid next to nothing for. If you know how to manage your resources, bottom of the line computers work just as well as top of the line ones.
